On Saturday the Hy-Noon Kiwanis Club hosted its annual Triathlon (1/2 mile swim/12miles biking around the lake and a 5K run). This year a Duathlon (1 mile run/12 mile bike and 5K run) was added. Fifty-nine individuals entered the Triathlon. Two three-person teams also entered. The Duathlon drew 10 participants.  The overall winner of the Triathlon was Cole Satterwhite of Sioux City with a time of 1 hour 14 minutes 29 seconds. Cole will be a senior this year at Bishop Heelan High School where he participates in cross country and track. . ...

At its August meeting, the Prairie Lakes Area Education Association board is expected to renew leases for programs using space in its Storm Lake building, and to provide space for a new tenant. Virginia Carlson of Storm Lake was among those honored at the Iowa State Fair for induction into the Iowa 4H Hall of Fame. Carlson represents Buena Vista County, where she has contributed to the 4-H program in many roles. Virginia began working for the Buena Vista County Extension Office in 1997 as an office assistant. At that time, she began crafting 4-H Memory Books with newspaper clippings and 4-H photos and has continued ever since...

For the second year, the Albert City Threshermen & Collectors Show has hosted a ceremony presenting Quilts of Valor made for local veterans. During this year’s show, two local service personnel were presented with quilts in the moving event - Pam Jacobson, U.S. Air Force veteran, and Ashley Sadewasser, who is still serving as an active duty Iowa Army National Guard member, in her 19th year of service. To date, 225,533 quilts have been awarded through the Quilts of Valor program...

Three Newell children put on a fundraiser of their own Friday, and donated the proceeds to TLC animal shelter in Newell. The kids came up with the idea to make rubber band bracelets and have a lemonade stand. Rowyn Nielson, Isabelle Landgraf and Will Landgraf, (and a few neighbor kids who helped make bracelets) raised $126 for the furbabies at TLC, selling about five gallons of lemonade. They presented the money to Pauline Larsen, who was thrilled with their donation...
