Participants in a kickboxing class at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center’s Fitness & Health Center in Storm Lake. Iowa reports 1st confirmed 2019 human West Nile virus case

Iowa officials have reported the state’s first confirmed human case of West Nile virus. The Iowa Public Health Department said Friday the man lives in Audubon County, is 61 to 80 years old and has recovered. Dr. Caitlin Pedati is the department’s medical director and Pedati says that until the state’s first hard frost, being outside means there’s a risk for West Nile virus infection from mosquitoes...

In less than two weeks, multiple people have been killed in tractor rollover incidents in northwest Iowa counties. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach officials said while the total number of fatalities in the state have decreased from approximately 30 fatalities to around 11 annually over a 30-year span, additional measures can be taken to prevent or decrease the chance of suffering a tractor rollover...

SLHS track project to begin

A project to resurface the Storm Lake High School track will move ahead this fall at a cost of $120,500. The low bidder for the work was Midwest Tennis and Track from Denison. After investigating costs to remove the debris from the old surface, the district found little potential savings and included that in the company’s contract. Sioux Rapids is gearing up for Tall Corn Days, which will include the first-ever Sweet Corn Eating Competition, along with a walk/run, parade, street dance, cemetery tour and other fun events.
