ANITA - The Newell-Fonda football team had a devastating end to their season when they traveled to face Class 8-man #1-ranked CAM for the quarterfinal round of the playoffs on Thursday evening, and fell 64-13. The Mustang defense struggled to stop the top rusher and scorer in the state as CAM senior Lane Spieker ran for 396 yards and seven touchdowns. CAM only had seven passing yards in the game but it wasn’t needed as they posted 447 rushing yards...

This area was stacked with talented teams in volleyball this year, topped by Newell-Fonda and Ridge View, who were both ranked at some point in the season, and both made it to their respective regional final matches. It’s a shame we never got to see them face each other. Every team had great athletes and put on a good show this year. Choosing which team to place each spiker was difficult but here we go...

CAM took it to the Mustangs tonight, 64-13. Lane Spieker rolled for seven rushing TDs and nearly 400 yards before hitting the bench in the fourth. NF got TDs on short runs by Mason Dicks and Ty Tauber. The Mustangs wrap up a thrilling season with a 9-2 record, just short of a UNI-Dome trip...

Runners from Storm Lake, Alta-Aurelia, Sioux Central and Ridge View ran in the State Cross Country Meet on Friday and Saturday at Kennedy Park, Fort Dodge. Alta-Aurelia freshman Nora Peterson took third place in the Class 1A girls race with a time of 19:13.11. ...

LENOX - For the second week in a row the Newell-Fonda football team has taken on a playoff opponent on the road, and for the second week in a row the Mustangs have won those games. This past Friday the Mustangs traveled down to Lenox to face the Class 8-man #7-ranked Tigers, and came home with a 39-14 win to advance to the quarterfinals and continue their season...

The Newell-Fonda and Ridge View football teams are the last area football teams standing and will play in the second round of the playoffs tonight. The 8-man #10-ranked Mustangs will travel to face #8-ranked undefeated Lenox tonight at 7 p.m. The Tigers took a 52-8 win over Lamoni in the first round of the playoffs last week...

SCHALLER - The Class 2A #13-ranked Ridge View volleyball team moved on to the semifinal round of the Class 2A Region 1 volleyball tournament with a 3-0 win one Lawton-Bronson on Wednesday evening. The Raptors dominated the first set with a 25-10 win before the Eagles fought back a bit in the remaining two sets. The Raptors defense held strong and the offense continued firing shots though to take the second set 25-16 and the third 25-13...

ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia volleyball team had an amazing comeback but a heartbreaking end in a 3-2 loss to East Sac County at home on Wednesday that ended their season. The first set started off close but the Raiders pulled out to a 19-11 lead. The Warriors pulled it back but still dropped the set 25-20. The second set fell away from the Warriors quickly, 25-16...

SIOUX RAPIDS - The Sioux Central volleyball team had a dramatic end to their season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at home in the first round of the Class 2A Region 1 tournament on Monday evening. Every point was fought for in the first set before HMS took it 25-23, but the Rebels retaliated with a 25-20 win in the second set and a 25-15 win the third to take a 2-1 lead. ...

STORM LAKE - The Storm Lake St. Mary’s volleyball team had a rough 3-0 loss to South O’Brien to end their season at home on Monday in the Class 1A Region 1 tournament. The Panthers got out to an early lead and led 10-3 at one point before the Wolverines pulled it back to tie it at 14-14 before going on to a 25-17 win in the first set...

SPENCER - The Storm Lake volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Spencer on Tuesday evening to end their season. The Tigers took all three sets rather quickly with a 25-8 win in the first set, a 25-11 win in the second and a 25-9 win in the third to complete the three set sweep...

LEMARS - Storm Lake sophomore Luiz Martinez and senior Tyler Moon qualified for the State Cross Country Meet with their top 10 performances at the State qualifier meet on Wednesday evening in LeMars. Martinez finished in fourth place with a time of 17:02.38 and Moon placed eighth at 17:16.32. Senior Matt Lenzmeier finished third for the Tornadoes in 42nd place at 18:40.27, freshman Adrian Zeledon-Pena came in 61st at 19:53.37 and senior Dylan Sliefert finished in 63rd at 19:56.49...

MOVILLE - The Ridge View cross country teams competed in the Western Valley Conference meet on Saturday in Moville. Sophomore Jaycie Vohs took the bronze on the girls side while teammate sophomore Madison Stowater came in behind her to take fourth place. ...

LAKE CITY - The Alta-Aurelia and Sioux Central cross country teams traveled to Lake City to compete in the Twin Lakes Conference cross country meet on Saturday. Alta-Aurelia freshman Nora Peterson turned in another outstanding performance with a first place finish in a time of 19:36.78 to win the conference girls race. ...

STORM LAKE - The Storm Lake volleyball team hosted their home tournament this weekend and lost two before winning their final match of the day. The faced Boone to start the day and had a close first set, only falling 21-18, before the Toreadors finished the second set quickly at 21-13. They were handled quickly in their next match by Kingsley-Pierson at a 21-12 loss in the first set and 21-7 loss in the second...

SIOUX RAPIDS - The Sioux Central football team had a rough Friday night as they hosted Class 1A #9-ranked West Sioux for the final regular season match and fell 26-14. The Falcons scored all their points in the first three quarters, with 14 scored in the first quarter and six in each the second and third, and shut out the Rebels until the fourth. Sioux Central senior Gibson Olson rushed in for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the Rebels on the board and tally the final score...

STORM LAKE - With a modest crowd wrapped in blankets against the first frosty night of the season, a severely shorthanded Storm Lake football team scored a moral victory by taking the field Friday night, but district leading Webster City handed out a 41-6 beating on Tornado turf...

LEMARS - Friday night did not go as planned for the Alta-Aurelia football team as they traveled to face Gehlen Catholic and suffered a 22-3 loss. The first quarter was a defensive battle with teams punting back and forth. The Jays scored two touchdowns, one with a two-point conversion, while junior Luiz Mendoza booted a 24-yard field goal to put the score at 15-3 going into the half. ...

SIBLEY - The Ridge View football team finished the regular season off with a 24-6 win at Sibley-Ocheyedan on Friday. The Generals received the opening kickoff but were stalled out and forced to punt. The Raptors returned the kick to the General 45. The Raptors drove downfield, and with a short run by senior quarterback Cade Harriman scored the first points of the game to take a 7-0 lead. ...

NEWELL - The Newell-Fonda football team hosted Ar-We-Va for the final regular season match-up and dominated for a 48-6 win over the Rockets. The Mustangs received the opening kickoff and drove downfield to score off a pass from junior quarterback Mason Dicks to senior Trey Jungers. ...

CHEROKEE - The Storm Lake cross country team ran in Cherokee for the Lakes Conference meet on Monday afternoon. The boys placed fourth out of six teams while Western Christian took the conference title. Storm Lake sophomore Luiz Martinez took the Lakes Conference bronze with a time of 17:09.22 while senior Tyler Moon put in a 10th place finish at 18:16.27. ...
