Alta Firemen celebrate 140 years - parade, meal, softball challenge set

Friday, August 6, 2021

It’s a battle for bragging rights, as Alta firefighters take on the county sheriff’s department in a softball challenge on Saturday, August 21 at 1 p.m. at the Alta billfold. Both sides are predicting victory and a trophy coming home to their department. “Our bats will be as hot as the fires we put out,” the firemen proclaim. Free-will donation proceeds will go to assist the two departments.

The Alta Fire Department is celebrating its “140th+1” anniversary that weekend, with a parade on Sunday the 22nd, starting at 3:30. The department is looking for parade participants - businesses, kids who want to decorate bikes, tractors, classic cars, motorcycles, law enforcement and first responder vehicles and anything else participants would like to show off.

To join the parade, call Dave Suhr at 712-299-4463 or Tyler Van Houten at 515-570-7913.

The parade route will start in the Alta-Aurelia High School/Summit Church area and moved down Main Street, crossing the highway to the county fairgrounds.

An Alta Firemen’s Appreciation Meal is planned for 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Community Center (free will donation), a free kid’s bouncy house, dunk tank and Mercy Air Care presentation at 4:30 round out the event.
