Alta-Aurelia drivers education ag safety workshop

Friday, April 16, 2021

Buena Vista County Farm Bureau organized a safety demonstration for the Alta-Aurelia driverís education class on April 12. Each student got to sit in the cab of a combine, tractor hooked to a grain cart, snowplow truck, and semi-tractor with 53í trailer.

The students were able to experience the size and visibility from the equipment and were shown safety features such as lights, reflectors, mirrors, and slow-moving vehicle signs. Presenters talked about equipment weight, length, width, travel speed, stopping distance turning radius, etc. and emphasized that most cars or pickups would go under the equipment in a rear end collision. Also discussed was road width and travel on gravel roads.

Presenters were: Brad Pedersen, City of Alta; Jim Davis, First Coop Assoc.; Nick Radke, Alta Implement; Rich Crow, BVU Ag Director; Jeff Lietz, Jeff Peterson and Richard Marshall, local farmers.

This event was made possible by equipment supplied by the City of Alta (snowplow), First Coop Association (semi-tractor and trailer) and Alta Implement (combine, tractor and grain cart). This was the fourth year Buena Vista County Farm Bureau has sponsored the event and we would like to thank Alta-Aurelia driverís education instructor Kevin Hammer for his support.
