Quilts of Valor for Alta veterans
Quilts of Valor were presented to three military veterans on September 3rd at the Alta Order of the Eastern Star meeting. “It was a total surprise to all three of them,” said Julie Petersen, Worthy Matron and presiding officer of the organization.
Quilt recipients were Harold Geisinger, a veteran of World War II; Richard “Bud” Petersen, a Korean War veteran; and Jan Peterson, an Army WAC who served in the Pentagon. They are the three military veterans in the organization.
The mission of the nation-wide Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts. It is a project that the Iowa Eastern Star picked up on, Petersen said, adding that a woman in Des Moines, Pat Burch, arranges with a company that makes the quilts. “They’re all different,” she said of the quilt designs. Locally, the project is recent and began about a year ago by the Alta Eastern Star.
The Order of the Eastern Star, established in 1850, is part of the Masonic Fraternity, and now consists of both men and women.
