A-A schools athletics update heard
First-year Alta-Aurelia Athletic Director Grant Peckenschneider reported on current efforts to the board of education this week.
He told the board that efforts are underway toward new record boards, banners and an additional mural for the gym.
The programs are having difficulties finding sports officials. Varsity positions have been filled, but refs are still needed for JV and junior high games.
The Warrior wrestling program had no home duals scheduled for the season, but Okoboji generously offered to move their meet to A-A, Peckenschneider said.
Fall sports numbers are strong, he said, with football up four this year to 38, volleyball at 25, and cross country at 19. The football pre-season scrimmage has been called off because MMCRU is unable to compete, and A-A is looking for another possible opponent.
The Aurelia Bulldogs semi-pro team has played its last game, he also informed the board, as the franchise folded at the end of the recent season.
The program has been good to work with for the school district, and Peckenschneider said there is talk that the franchise could be sold to another owner. He feels there is a good chance it may be able to continue.
