Amazon to sponsor new computer science courses at SLHS
Storm Lake High School has been selected as an Amazon Future Engineer school.
The online giant offers a sponsored computer science education opportunity.
The program is designed to inspire and train students from underserved schools and communities to pursue careers in computer science.
Amazon will provide training this summer for two Storm Lake teachers, and in the fall, will provide for two courses at no cost to the district.
Superintendent Stacey Cole has been working on winning the selection for some time, making a case that Storm Lake students should have the same opportunities as those from more urban areas.
The idea resonated with Amazon, which was interested in bringing its program to a rural district, and the demographics and energy in Storm Lake proved attractive, Cole said.
