After debating on what to do this week for this column, it hit me like a bolt of lighting and set fire to my brain. With football season being so painfully close, this might be a good time to reveal my all time football team. My favorite players through history, well my history anyways, manning what I would think would be the best football team. So buckle up.
At quarterback would be Peyton Manning. This is a no brainer for me. I got into football when Manning started. He was the first QB I saw that really grabbed me by the eye. There has been no other man under center who has been better in the regular season.
My running back would be LaDainian Tomlinson. Again this mirrors my rise in watching football. At his peak there was probably no other running back on earth that could match him. LT was in a class all of his own.
The other running back would be an athlete who was similar to Tomlinson in Marshall Faulk. I love pass catching running backs. They add another dimension to the offense and both players could get it done doing both. Imagine running double screens when they're both out there. Pick your poison.
At the first wideout spot is Randy Moss. Moss, when he cared enough, was a freak of nature. No two or three defensive backs could slow him down. Moss had the talent to straight up embarrass a secondary.
The second wideout would, of course, be Jerry Rice. If Moss could stretch the field then Jerry could take advantage of everything that gets opened up underneath. Another pick your poison choice for the defense. Would you want to be a cornerback matched up against either of these two? Me either.
At tight end would be Jason Witten. He's a good blocker, can get out and make the chains grabbing catch. Just be a smart move to have him over some of the other tight ends in history.
I'm taking a cop out for the offensive line. Just give me the current Cowboys O-Line and I'm fine with it.
My first defensive end would probably be Reggie White. He was a great pass rusher for the Packers and Eagles through his career. Manning the other DE spot would be Jared Allen. Another great pass rusher who came out of nowhere to be great at his position.
The defensive tackles, as I believe in a 4-3 defense, would be Warren Sapp and "Mean" Joe Greene. Imagine those two guys going at your guards for four quarters. Non-stop motors, and mouths in Sapp's case. But I think that'd be a fearsome defensive line.
My outside linebackers would have to be Derrick Brooks and Von Miller. Brooks was a great coverage linebacker were as Miller could add more to my pass rush, but also has the skills to drop back if he has to. With these two as my outside linebackers it would be fun to see what they'd bring to the table with their different skill sets.
Middle linebacker is a tough one. Do I go with the best one currently in the game, or do I reach back through history itself? I think I'll stay in present time and take Luke Kuechly. His ability to change a game is outstanding. The man is one of a kind in the league, and I think he'll easily go down as a top five MLB when his career is over.
My two cornerbacks should be pretty fun. Charles Woodson is one of them. Woodson, recently retired, was a ballhawk. 65 career interceptions is something I'd like to have. He had at least one in every season he played more than 10 games in. Manning the other corner spot is someone who wasn't known for his tackling ability but none of that mattered to Deion Sanders. Sanders is fast, and could take out most of the field during his prime. Plus you got to have that high step.
My safeties would consist of Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott. Reed and Lott are also ballhawks that could sniff it from the air. Both guys could hit with the best of them so wideouts wouldn't want to cross the middle of the field at all. So with that backend of the defense, good luck finding any room to throw that ball.
At kicker would be Gary Anderson. The all time points leader in the NFL. He was good during his 22 year career. Punting the ball would be, well, I don't know honestly. I couldn't tell you of any punters off hand so just pick your favorite for me.
My returner would be Deion Sanders. He has the speed to beat people on returns. And, again, do the high step into the end zone.
