Search for assistant principal changes direction
After a lukewarm response from the staff at the elementary school, the Storm Lake Board of Education opted not to hire an assistant principal. Instead, the board agreed to add an additional student services director to the staff to help carry the administrative load.
When the school sought an assistant principal, a blind screening of candidates was held, leading to a series of virtual interviews, and face-to-face interviews with four finalists. Members of the leadership team, some teachers and a few high school students sat in during the selection process. The input from elementary staff was split.
“Finding the right person didn’t happen that day,” Superintendent of Schools Stacey Cole told the board. “It didn’t feel right to force it.
Board members concurred with the plan to hire a student services director instead, and a search for that job was approved. Board members said it was important to value the teachers’ opinions, and felt that hiring a person as assistant principal who didn’t fit in with the staff could be damaging to the school.
