Playground company selected for Alta Elementary
A new school playground design has been selected for Alta Elementary School, and the plan is to have the playground installed in the spring.
The Alta-Aurelia School Board voted unanimously at the December 15th meeting to purchase the playground from Park Planet at an estimated cost of $300,000.
New playground equipment is essential at the school due to the playground’s closure in the fall when it was deemed unsafe.
The old playground equipment is more than 20 years old.School officials previously conducted research, and possible companies were narrowed down to three.
Alta Elementary students recently participated in the voting process to have their voices heard in the selection.
Prior to discussion and a vote, Board members were aware of the time constraints to make a selection. “What we’re trying to do is get locked into a price,” Superintendent William Walters said, due to increases in cost after December.
Walters said Park Planet will be flexible with school district officials during the planning process with regard to making changes in the design to include adding or deleting components or changing the color scheme.
Plans are underway to have the old playground equipment removed. A volunteer has agreed to remove the equipment at no cost.
To help with the playground cost, Alta Elementary School Principal Stacy Mueller said the current fundraiser begins December 21st to continue through Jan. 8th when students will take cupcake orders. The Scratch Cupcakery cupcakes will be ready for delivery beginning January 27.
