City officials consider tree carving idea

The Alta City Council is considering a project to have dead ash tree trunks near the park and football field carved by an artist.

The trees have been planned for removal after the emerald ash borer infestation.

Mayor Kevin Walsh suggested that eight remaining trees could be carved with letters to spell out the school nickname, “Warriors,” with one tree carved with a shield and sword.

The trees are located along South Johnson Street and Veterans Drive. Walsh said cost could be $1,200 to carve the trees on one side, plus $400 for the logo carving. He said he hasn’t approached the school board or school boosters to see if they would be interested in sharing cost. City officials feel the funds could be available from park or tree trimming money if the council approves.

Council members plan to look over the location to see if they are interested in moving forward with the idea.

Plans were in place to take the trees down this fall or winter, but they will be moved to the end of the tree removal list to give the council time to consider.
