Alta-Aurelia to have 2 full-time school nurses
When Alta-Aurelia schools potentially reopen in August, a nurse will always be available.
The school district is stepping up efforts on several fronts due to COVID-19, and one effort is to increase the nursing staff from 1 1/2 to 2. A full-time nurse will work in both Alta and Aurelia for the 2020-21 school year.
Sonia Galvin is the District School nurse and Peg Hinkeldey the school nurse who formerly worked part-time and will now be full-time.
The school board approved the increase at the July 20th meeting.
Superintendent William Walters said this is the time to have two full-time nurses. “It’s important that we have a nurse in both buildings that is accessible during these very uncertain times,” he said. “Our nurses are our health experts within our school. With our health plan in place it’s important we have individuals monitoring the health of all our students the entire school day.”
The school district is using Medicaid dollars toward the cost of the additional hours.
