Alta High School commencement to be held on Sunday
Alta - Aurelia High School Principal Tom Ryherd detailed plans for the Sunday, May 17th high school commencement, speaking to board members at the May 11th Alta-Aurelia School Board meeting which was livestreamed. The graduation will take place on the original date at 2 p.m. on the football field in Alta, weather permitting.
“A lot of thought and time and effort and conversation has gone into this plan,” Ryherd said.
For the ceremony, parents can park along the fence and are asked to stay in their cars. The 50 graduates will be in clusters of 10, spaced apart on the football field and will each wear a commemorative class of 2020 mask. They will pick up their diploma themselves. Three class speakers will have the opportunity to deliver their speeches.
The ceremony will be livestreamed through Storm Lake Radio and can be accessed by clicking on the sports tab, then livestream tab.
“Overall, we know the senior class has lost a ton - spring sports, prom, a normal graduation - and we are trying to do our darnest to make sure that we give them something,” Ryherd said. He recognizes that although these activities cannot be replaced, the high school wants to give them things they can hold onto.
Ryherd said it has taken a tireless team to put the commencement together. Superintendent William Walters said he is extremely proud. “A great deal of time and effort has been put forth to make this day for our Class of 2020 special. It won’t be the same as past years, but they will be together, and it will be memorable. It was a team effort by our high school staff to make this possible,” Walters said.
In the event of rain, alternate commencement dates are May 23, June 21 or a virtual graduation on June 28.
