Friday, March 13, 2020

The 3rd annual GRIT Cultural Conference was hosted on Friday, February 28 by Buena Vista University in partnership with ISU Extension and Outreach and Northwestern College. The GRIT event is designed to encourage youth from underrepresented populations to visit and take part in activities on a college campus. One hundred eleven high school students from Storm Lake High School and Storm Lake St. Mary’s in Buena Vista County and Webster City High School and South Hamilton in Hamilton County attended this event. Participants included 33 freshman, 52 sophomores, 18 juniors and 8 seniors. The high school participants selected an academic interest area form the following eight options: Athletic Training, Environmental Ethics, Education, Physical Science, Environmental Science, Math & Gaming, Digital Media or Pre-Med/Biology. In additional to an experiential academic session with a faculty member, the high school students also participated in leadership challenges, a campus tour, a cultural/college fair, a BVU student keynote address and a creative design process. Survey results indicate that the GRIT Cultural Conference helped students explore career options and educational plans for after high school. / Photos submitted
