Warrior jazz band scores big
Alta-Aurelia High School’s 22-member Warrior Jazz Band scored the highest possible rating this past Monday, Jan. 27, at the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) Jazz festival held in Storm Lake. They were among the bands receiving the highest overall rating, Division 1.
“I was very proud of the kids,” band director Megan Benz said. “They performed to their ability and received the rating they deserved.” The jazz band students play saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, drum set, vibes and bass.
In this state competition, bands are required to perform one set with three different tunes, demonstrating a variety of musical skills. The Warrior Jazz Band played a piece by the 31’s; the ballad “Angel Eyes” where Hannah Loring soloed on the alto sax backed by the band; then the Latin number “Running of the Bulls.”
At the conclusion of the state’s annual festival, bands receive three different ratings and comments. “The kids put in a lot of hard work,” she said.
