Alta man charged with Assault on Police, OWI in Dec. 31 incident

An Alta man faces charges after shutting his car window on a Storm Lake Police officer’s arm, and driving drunk with his two small children in the back seat.

Around 4 a.m. on the morning of December 31, an officer pulled a vehicle over near the intersection of C49 and 90th Avenue.

The driver, Ricardo Saez, age 37 of Alta, had a suspended driver’s license. Saez refused officer’s instructions to exit his vehicle at which time police allege that Saez stepped on the accelerator in an attempt to flee but had failed to take the vehicle out of park. The officer reached into the driver’s window in order to stop Saez. at which time Saez closed the vehicle window on the officer’s arm. The officer was forced to break out the driver’s side window to free his arm. Saez was taken into custody.

Police further allege that Saez was intoxicated and that he had two children ages 5 and 3 in the back seat of his vehicle unrestrained. There were no injuries during the incident.

Saez is charged with OWI, Assault on a Peace Officer, two counts of Child Endangerment, Driving While Suspended, No Insurance, two counts of Failure to Secure a Child and Interference With Official Acts. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $7,500 bond.

The children were released to the custody of their mother. The SLPD filed a report with the Iowa Department of Human Services. The SLPD was assisted by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department.
