Storm Lake middle school wins state math award
The Iowa Governorís STEM Advisory Council has awarded Storm Lake Middle Schoolís eighth-grade math class with its Scale Up Math Award.
With the award, 54 students will have access to the integrative Desmos-Illustrative digital math program starting in the next few weeks.
The Desmos-Illustrative program encourages collaboration through problem-based challenges that involve sketching, predicting, brainstorming, creating and negotiation.
Students will continue to use the same probelm-based curriculum but will now be able to complete the same activities using the Desmos digital platform. Which is made to be accessible and engaging to students.
The value of Desmos is $1,300. In addition the Storm Lake Elementary School and Early Childhood Center were also awarded Differentiated Math Centers through the Scale Up Award.
The total value of these awards to the Storm Lake Community School District is $2,430.
The Scale Up awards help improve learner interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects for K-12 students throughout the state.
