Corbet Butler moving to Storm Lake
Seven-year Alta-Aurelia band director Corbet Butler will be leaving the district to join Storm Lake after school breaks for the summer.
Alta-Aurelia’s School Board approved his resignation Monday.
The Spirit Lake native and 2011 Buena Vista University graduate has blazed trails in Storm Lake and its neighbors since college, keeping in tradition with a strong musical showing for the recently-merged district.
During his time as a student, he volunteered as an assistant director for the Tornado Marching Band and served as “The Voice of The Tornado Marching Band” for Friday night football halftime performances. He has also served as advisor for the Iowa Ambassadors of Music overseas travel and performance program, and continues to perform as a musician or guest performer with bands in northwest Iowa and Minnesota.
Butler previously worked as Sibley-Ocheyedan Middle School Band Director.
During his first two years in Alta-Aurelia, A-A’s jazz band earned first place at Iowa Jazz Championships. His concert bands and jazz bands have earned him several consecutive Division I ratings.
Storm Lake High School’s music programs may offer him even more to excel in, such as the Mariachi band. He will be moving from a 2A school to a now-4A school.
Butler’s hiring was approved by the board this week, at a salary of $54,876, plus $1,116 to serve as music director for the school musical, and $5,153 to serve as high school instrumental instructor.
Butler was one of three teaching resignations submitted in the last school Alta-Aurelia School Board meeting before summer break. Contracts for teachers were offered for three other positions.
Butler will debut in the Star Spangled Spectacular parade for the Fourth of July, as one of his first SLHS showings after replacing outgoing director Colleen Hecht.
