From Sunday, April 14 through Tuesday, April 16, members of the Ridge View FFA chapter attended the State FFA Conference in Ames, Iowa. While at the convention, several students received phenomenal awards and recognitions. Receiving their Iowa Degrees were Russell Brummer, Connor Pickhinke, Rayann Volkert, and Katlyn Wiese. The conduct of meetings team consisting of Kael Wiese, Connor Naberhaus, Natasha Reginneter, Logan Pickhinke, Travis Wiese, Abe Henderson, and Ross Mentzer, got a gold rating and placed fifth overall. Receiving a silver rating was the agricultural issues team of Rachel Kenny, Katlyn Wiese, Brooklyn Albers, Russell Brummer, and Emerson Else. Another contest participant was Connor Pickhinke. He competed in extemporaneous speaking and earned a silver rating. Connor was also a finalist for the Agriscience Star over Iowa contest.

Besides contests, the students also had the opportunity to attend a career fair, motivational speakers, and other leadership activities. While at the career fair, students were able to view displays from several colleges, agricultural businesses, and various organizations. The keynote speaker was a man named Matt Stutzman who was born without arms. He talked about all of the challenges he has overcome in his life to eventually become the “armless archer”. Matt talked to the kids about not giving up and pushing through your struggles to reach your goals. Another speaker was the national FFA president, Luke O’Leary. He spoke about the differences between joy and being happy. Overall, the 91st Iowa State Leadership Conference was a great experience for all who attended and a success for contest participants.
