St. Mary’s scores high for Iowa Assessment exams

Storm Lake St. Mary’s School is happy to report that the school once again has achieved a perfect score on the Iowa Assessment standardized exams – a rare feat for a school of any size. St. Mary’s High School freshmen students achieved 100 percent proficiency level in reading where the state average is 83 percent. The St. Mary’s eighth grade students achieved 94 percent proficiency in reading where the state average is 75 percent proficiency

Last year, St. Mary’s High School juniors achieved 100 percent in both reading and math and the freshmen achieved 100 percent proficiency in reading.

“I believe our test scores are consistently strong because St. Mary’s has dedicated teachers who challenge our students to excel, and the small class sizes allow our students to ask questions and receive help when necessary,” said St. Mary’s 6-12 Principal Ryan Berg. “Our students also have the drive to do their best, and we are proud of how well they do year in and year out.”

The local parochial school had stellar testing scores in other subject areas also. In four levels, St. Mary’s students scored in over the 90 percent proficiency level in science. The eighth grade students scored 94 percent proficiency in science where the state average is 84 percent proficiency. St. Mary’s High School freshmen students scored 92 percent proficiency on the science assessment, with the state average of proficiency at 79 percent.

St. Mary’s fifth grade students also scored at 92 percent proficient in science with the state average at 79 percent proficiency. The third grade students scored at 90 percent proficient with the state average at 80 percent proficient.

In the math department, St. Mary’s High School freshmen scored 92 percent proficient in math with the state average at 78 percent proficient. St. Mary’s fifth grade students scored 88 percent proficient with the state average at 74 percent proficient. St. Mary’s seventh grade students also scored well in math at 85 percent proficient with the stage average at 81 percent.
