Heitman’s 17 not enough for Panthers
STORM LAKE - Despite getting 17 points from senior Jake Heitman, the St. Mary’s Panthers fell apart late against Emmetsburg on Friday night, dropping a 63-39 decision.
The E-Hawks got up early against the Panthers, holding a five-point edge after the first quarter, 15-10. St. Mary’s hung around in the second quarter and only trailed by six at halftime, 29-23.
St. Mary’s outscored Emmetsburg by two in the third to cut their deficit to only four going to the final stanza, 39-35. However, the E-Hawks shifted into another gear while St. Mary’s stayed in neutral in the final eight minutes. Emmetsburg outscored the Panthers by 20 points in the fourth quarter to take the contest easily.
Heitman scored his 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and had four steals. Senior Alex Merten had nine points and three rebounds, junior Sam Peters adding five points.
The Panthers went 14-of-39 from the floor and 5-of-21 from behind the arc. They had 12 rebounds, five assists and eight steals.
St. Mary’s falls to 1-16 on the year. Tonight they head to 6-13 Ridge View and will then host 5-11 West Bend-Mallard on Tuesday.
