An Alta couple is opening a new restaurant in Aurelia this week.

Lalo’s Diner, at the corner of Main St and Highway 7 across (opposite of Mud on Main) opened for business on Thursday, with a grand opening celebration to come on Monday. The tex-mex-esque restaurant is the only one of its kind in either Alta or Aurelia.

Rachel Medina, the chief owner and operator, is getting a taste of ownership with her first restaurant. Her previous experience includes helping out at her parent’s old restaurant a time ago, El Tapatio in Storm Lake.

“I wanted something a little different from every other Mexican place in the area,” said Medina. “I like this location, right off the road.”

The stay-at-home mom wanted something she could do while being able to take care of her 2-year-old, Rachel Sofia. “I opened this to be closer to my house and have more time with my baby,” she said.

Lalo’s serves a fairly large menu in a small location, offering a variety of unique burritos and burgers as well as pizzas, unique kinds of fries and even crepes. It’s American food with a twist of homemade Mexican goodness in each bite.

Free coffee will be offered all day long throughout the winter, and Taco Tuesday will offer tacos for just 88 cents.

Medina recommends their specialties, the Concha Burger and the pizzas with a Mexican twist.

“Everything has a twist in it, it’s something new to try out,” she said.

Some improvements are in the works as they move into the building that reportedly used to be a salon and restaurant before. They plan to put a sign on the exterior for more visibility, but the food may be worth your while assuming you can find their currently unmarked location.
