Newell-Fonda girls remain unbeaten
POCAHONTAS - The Newell-Fonda Mustang girls continued to use their pressure defense to great success as they once again held an opponent to under 30 points, the third time this season. They suffocated Pocahontas Area on Friday night, taking a 73-29 victory.
“We were able to get things going in the first quarter with good pressure and turning turnovers into scoring opportunities. I felt our girls did a great job of moving the basketball and finding the open shooters,” N-F Coach Dick Jungers said. “Defensively we made things challenging and did a good job with limiting their possessions to one shot.”
Newell-Fonda had a 16-point edge after the first quarter, 22-6. They pushed it up to 35 at the break, 49-14. The Mustangs were up by 40 after the third, 60-20. N-F continued to outscore PAC in the final eight minutes.
N-F sophomore Maggie Walker came off of the bench with 15 points to pace the Mustangs on 6-of-7 shooting. Senior Olivia and sophomore Ella Larsen had 14 points each, Olivia getting a double-double with 10 rebounds as the sisters combined for 11 steals. Sophomore Bailey Sievers had 10 points off the bench, and junior Megan Morenz had 10 points and four assists.
Newell-Fonda moves to 10-0 and 4-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They head to St. Edmond on Tuesday night.
