Betty Jean Dahm August 21, 1930 - December 1, 2018
Betty “Elizabeth” Jean Dahm, age 88, of Early, passed away on Saturday, December 1, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Mass of the Christian burial was be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, with Father Jim Smith and Deacon Mike Higgins officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation was from 4 - 7 p.m., Thursday evening, at the church.
Betty was born August 21, 1930, in Carroll, to Michael and Rose (Maystadt) Wattier. She attended St. Lawrence Catholic School through the 7th grade, and then moved to Early in 1943.
She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1948. Elizabeth attended Buena Vista College five summers and attained a BS degree in elementary education with a two year certificate for teaching. She taught in country school, all grades for four years in Jackson Township # 1 and # 2. Later she taught 4th grade at Schaller for three years.
On June 16, 1955, Betty married Leo Francis Dahm at the Sacred Heart Church in Early. They lived on their family farm in Nemaha all their lives. Seven living children were born to this union: Rose, Francis, Dianne, Susanne, Jean, Yvonne, and Paul.
Outside of raising her family, Betty cooked at the Sacred Heart School for three years. After it closed in 1990, Betty then worked at Varenhorst Fabric in Storm Lake, and then Walmart for 10 ˝ years until she retired. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Guild, Catholic Daughters of America – serving as a regent for seven years. She loved visiting her grandchildren, gardening, flowers, bird watching, sewing, doing crafts, facebooking, and having coffee with friends. She was also deeply devoted to our Blessed Mother Mary.
Betty is survived by her seven children: Rose (Bob) Willard of Logan, Francis (Alina) Dahm of Nemaha, Dianne Mahan of Pilot Mound, Susanne (Steve) Mahin of Dunnell, MN, Jean Statz of Boone,, Yvonne (Tom) Lazure of Fort Calhoun, NE, and Paul (Kelly) Dahm of Gilbert; her siblings: Don Wattier, Kathryn Dick, Beverly Thiel, Michael Wattier, and Judy (Eugene) Haverman; brother-in-law Joseph Sippel; twenty grandchildren: John (Mandy) Willard, Jenny Willard, Elizabeth (Nick) Pearson, Teri (Chad) Soyer, Dong Wang, Jonathan, Joseph, Jacob, Jeremiah and Joshua Mahin, Rachael (Bryce) Hansen, Jacob (Amy) Stewart, Anna, Patrick, Nick, and Sarah Statz, Thomas (Alivia) Lazure and Lucas and Hanna Lazure, Noah, Andrew and Ethan Dahm; nine great grandchildren: Bennett and Kaitlyn Willard, Cameron and William Pearson, Emmett and Nolan Soyer, Marie and Kaylin Stewart, and Ella Hansen. Other survivors include her brothers and sisters-in-law: Jeanne Dahm, Mary Johnsen, Ruth and Ken Boes, Helen Snyder, and Bonnie and Ben Fonseca; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Leo; his parents Leo and Helen Dahm; her parents Michael and Rose Wattier; her sisters: MaryAnn Sippel and Ruth Ann Wattier; her brothers in-law: Lenny Snyder, Jerry Johnson, Larry Thiel, Joe Dahm and Francis Dick; her sisters in-law: Kathy Wattier and Edna Wattier; and her son-in-law Joe Mahan.
