Tuesday morning, Sheriff Kory Elston, Buena Vista County Sheriff spoke at Kiwanis. Kory was accompanied by Deputy Sergeant Joey Speers. Joey is a detective assigned to investigate drug related crimes. Three major drugs used in our area are marijuana, meth, and opiates. Crystal meth has replaced anhydrous meth as most used drug in our area. Most of the meth is prepared in labs in Mexico and then trucked across the border and transported to Omaha and from there to Denison. Joey said that 12-14 years ago 1/8 ounce bag of meth sold for $350. Today meth coming from Mexico is a higher grade dose but sells for $35-$50 a bag. Marijuana which also comes from Mexico where it is pressed into a brick form.

Opiate abuse involving heroin is more prevalent in eastern Iowa is making its way into our area also.

Heroin is mixed with fentanyl. Fentanyl is made in China and can be bought on the dark web. Fentanyl is a highly addictive drug. When inhaled by officers making a bust can cause them to overdose. Officers carry a Narc-Can in spray form which can immediately counter effect fentanyl.
