Museum display moves to Alta, donations flow in

Friday, November 16, 2018

A central display at the Buena Vista County Historical Society museum in Storm Lake for the past 12 years has been removed. The Walter Becker cabinet of wooden scale-model equipment that has occupied the central display area of the main room is being moved, with the blessings of the Becker family, to the Becker building in Alta, which houses the community center.

The cupboards are far from bare, however, as the museum has received numerous artifacts donated to the collection, including the first color television set in Storm Lake, historic books including a 1915 Storm Lake High School annual and military service records, cameras, sports memorabilia including the collections of trophies from the former Supher Springs High School, early postcards of Storm Lake, antique fishing equipment, a child’s spinning wheel, military and medical gear.

New LED lighting has been installed on the outside of the building, with lighting to be added to the gazebo as well. The small park adjacent to the museum will get a facelift as part of an Eagle Scout project. A large Wood sculpture frorh the Wood, Wine & Blues competition is being added to the area.

Winter hours at the museum will be noon-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays during January and February.
