Police close in on $20k K9 goal
Storm Lake Police Department has collected over $13,000 toward its efforts to obtain and train a K9 unit dog, toward the $20,000 goal.
“It’s been a real community effort,” says Police Chief Mark Prosser. “We’ve had kids get involved, schools, businesses doing Blue Jean Friday collections, some really creative ideas.”
With city council approval, the department will also apply for a Buena Vista County Foundation grant for $8,375 to equip a current squad car’s rear seat for a K9.
Prosser noted that while it has been some time since the department has had a dog, the K9 programs have always been handled outside the city budget, funded by donations, grants and seized criminal assets.
