'Support Siouxland Soldiers' holds event in Aurelia
Local veterans and their families gathered at the Aurelia Community Center on Thursday, July 26 to socialize and participate in Support Siouxland Soldiers.
Jerry Weiland of Aurelia, the Cherokee County Director of Veterans Affairs, contacted Sarah Petersen who is an organizer for Support Siouxland Soldiers and asked her if she would be interested in hosting an event for Cherokee County. Petersen agreed. The organizers of Support Siouxland Soldiers didn't exactly know how many veterans would participate. They prepared for 400 veterans to show up.
Each veteran and their family who participated, received a box of groceries, a meal, frozen meat and the chance to talk to various agencies around the community who help veterans. This event gave veterans the chance to socialize and meet new people.
Area veterans received supportive supplies at an event in Aurelia Thursday.
Jerry Weiland stated he was very happy with the outcome of veterans and families who participated.
Support Siouxland Soldiers was established in 2007 with a mission to help all Siouxland veterans and military families. More than 18,000 veterans live and work in the Siouxland area.
Since 2007, the organization has helped provide over 100,000 pounds of groceries, over 5,000 care packages have been sent to troops overseas and over $50,000 in gift cards and emergency relief grants have been given to local veterans.
