FONDA - Through the two 1A-Region 1 playoff games, the Newell-Fonda Mustangs have now outscored their opponents, 22-2. They were able to hammer away on Friday night against River Valley, taking a 13-1 decision in only four innings to move on to the 1A-Region 1 finals.

River Valley got four batters at the plate in the top of the first but Newell-Fonda was able to get out of the half inning with no damage done. They turned around to plate three with their turn. Junior Emma Stewart reached on a one out error, freshman Ella Larsen hitting a single that got Stewart to third. A throwing error got Stewart to third and Larsen to second. Sophomore Megan Morenz got a base hit to score both of the runners, Morenz ending up at second. Freshman Maggie Walker laid down a sac bunt that brought in Morenz.

Following a 1-2-3 defensive section of the second inning, Newell-Fonda went back to work. Junior Olivia Larsen hit a lead off triple and then scored on a Stewart grounder. A ground out and a passed ball got Stewart to third, Walker driving her in for her second RBI of the night, 5-0 the score.

River Valley picked up a couple of walks in the third, but a runner was thrown out trying to steal second, the Mustang defense keeping them off of the scoreboard. Freshman Bailey Sievers drew a walk to start the home half and senior Peyton Wilken followed suit. Eighth grader Macy Sievers singled to load the bases, Olivia Larsen following that up with a two score single. Ella Larsen singled to bring in the younger Sievers, Morenz plating Olivia Larsen and Stewart. Later on, Morenz scored on a wild pitch to bring it to an 11-0 score.

The Wolverines got a run in the top of the fourth with a small two out rally to end the Mustang shut out bid. N-F responded right back. Macy Sievers had a lead off single, Olivia Larsen getting a base hit with a passed ball moving them to second and third. Stewart smacked a hit that scored both of them to hit that 12 run rule to end the game.

Ella Larsen picked up the win in the four innings with only allowing one hit and had no earned runs. She put down five River Valley batters on strikes.

Newell-Fonda laid out 15 hits through the four innings, three of those coming from Olivia Larsen who also had a pair of RBIs. Morenz had two hits with a team high four RBIs.

The Mustangs improve to 24-13. Tonight they head to Swea City for a match up against 25-4 North Union in the 1A-Region 1 finals. This will be the second meeting between the two teams this year as Newell-Fonda took a 4-0 contest back on June 5. NU senior pitcher Kate Anderson has a 23-4 record with an ERA of 1.62. Sophomore Hope Steinberger has 48 hits on the year with 21 RBIs and 16 steals to lead their offense.
