Reminder to register for ISU Extension and Outreach Summer Youth Camps and Programs

Wednesday, May 30, 2018

As the school year wraps up, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach reminds parents to register their child(ren) for the upcoming summer youth camps and programs. Youth do not need to be 4-H members to participate. There will be 26 youth camps and/or programs offered throughout Cherokee County beginning in June and continuing through early-August. Events will be hosted in Cherokee, Aurelia, Marcus and Washta.

“These camps are a great opportunity for youth - both 4-H and non-4-H members - to have fun while continuing their education outside of the classroom during the summer,” said Debbie Erpelding, Cherokee County Youth Coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. “This summer, we are offering camps in the areas of Robotics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences).”

Eleven of the planned events are for youth who have completed 1st through third grade, are half days, and cost only $5 per event. The remaining 15 camps are for those who have completed 4th grade or older. These camps generally last for one or two days, and range in price from $10 to $20.

“The great thing about these summer camps is that they are affordable and interactive,” Erpelding said. “Youth will be involved in hands-on activities, such as programming robots, learning the basics of canoeing and water safety, or creating their own recipes and hosting a cooking show, just to name a few examples. We do also offer financial assistance for families who may need it.”
