Don Burhop, age 87, of Storm Lake, passed away on Monday, May 14, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the St.John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the E & R Cemetery in rural Schaller. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 16, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the church.
Donald Theodore Burhop was born on December 21,1930 in Buena Vista County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Olga (Voge) Burhop. He was baptized on January 11, 1931 and later confirmed in May 1944 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Don attended Hayes School south of Storm Lake. He graduated there in 1948. Following graduation, he worked on his parentsí farm. On January 16, 1952 Don reported for induction into the United States Army and went through the Processing Center at Camp Crowder, Missouri. From there he went to Fort Knox, Kentucky for basic training. He completed Infantry School (Airborne Course) at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then traveled by ship from Fort Lawton, Seattle, Washington on the U.S. Naval Ship General Simon B. Buckner to Brady Air Base in Kyushu, Japan (2M Parachute Maintenance Detachment, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team). This was during the Korean Conflict. Don received an Honorable Discharge on December 21, 1953.
Don was married to Virginia Ploeger at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on May 2, 1954. Their marriage was blessed with three children.
Don and Virginia farmed north of Schaller until they moved to Storm Lake in the fall of 2001.
Don was an active member of the Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and treasurer. He enjoyed being with family and his friends, and especially enjoyed the time spent with his three grandsons. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren and their achievements. In later years, Don and Virginia enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada.
He leaves to mourn one daughter, Kimberli (Jim) Polish; two sons, Kirby (Jan) Burhop and Kelly Burhop; three grandsons, Karl (Ardita) Burhop, Vince (Greta) Burhop and Alex Burhop; sisters-in-law, Donna (Darold) Lindstrom, Darlene Wells and Margaret Burhop; brothers-in-law, Melvin (Dorothy) Ploeger, Duane (Karen) Ploeger and Warren (Nancy) Ploeger and special friend Margaret Crawford along with many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, his parents and brother.
