Warrior boys and girls track find success at District meet
MANSON - The Alta-Aurelia boys and girls track teams saw numerous State qualifiers on Thursday night a 2A District meet. Overall the boys finished second and the girls won the district with a score of 121, coming back from a 25 point deficit in the second half of the meet.
“The Warriors had a big night tonight qualifying in six events. We have a chance in a few events,” AA Boys Coach Wendell Larsen said. “I’m very proud of how we competed. We have had a very nice season and will look forward to competing at State next week.”
The Warriors qualified for State in seven events this year. Nick Gaes will be competing in four of those events. He won the discus with a throw of 160-8 and then set a new school record while taking the shot put with a heave of 51-06. Gaes will also be in the 110 hurdles after running a 15.77, and will be part of the shuttle hurdle team.
The shuttle hurdle ran a 1:01.9 thanks to Jaden Henrichs, Chandler Damewood, Levi Sleezer and Gaes. Kaleb Sleezer took second in the 100 meter dash to punch his ticket to State after a time of 11.57. The 4x100 team of Ricky Pizano, Anthony Krier, Michael Ryherd and K. Sleezer won with the time of 44.39, and then the 4x200 team, which has the same group as the 4x100, took the event with a time of 1:31.82 to advance to State.
“I am so happy for the girls on our team. They have worked very hard to achieve this team goal, and definitely earned it fighting back from a 25 point deficit during the second half of the meet,” AA Girls Coach Tim Galvin said. “Everyone performed well tonight. Our team will be busy next week at the State meet.”
The sprint medley team of Grace DePuma, Rowan Kolpin, Brittany Turnquist and Lily Peterson finished in 1:52.69 to advance. The 4x800 team of Alexa Fredericksen, Alicia Turnquist, Alania Westphal and Lauren Rohwer moved on with a time of 10:28.36. The shuttle hurdle group of Hannah Loring, Jessica Larson, Alicia Turnquist and Jess Flaherty will move on after a time of 1:09.82 which was good for second place.
Peterson took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.38 and then second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.03 seconds. Flaherty finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.37 and managed to sneak into the State meet. Rohwer finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:34.25 to advance forward. Alicia Turnquist won the 400 hurdles in 1:10.76 to move on.
The 4x100 team of Jess Flaherty, Rowan Kolpin, Grace DePuma and Brittany Turnquist won with a time of 52.31 to advance. The 4x400 team of Rohwer, A. Turnquist, Fredericksen and Peterson will also be at State after winning in 4:18.20.
The State meet being on Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
