Alta-Aurelia girls’ stingy defense downs St. Mary’s

STORM LAKE - The Warriors used a suffocating defense on Friday night to defeat St. Mary’s, 55-18, holding the Panthers to 17 percent shooting.

The Warriors and Panthers battled back and forth in the first quarter as the Warriors’ defense began to kick in, helping them take a 10 point lead to the second frame, 17-7. The Panthers mustered two points in the second as Alta-Aurelia began to pull away, taking a 28-9 lead to the third. The Warriors outscored St. Mary’s by nine points in the third and fourth quarters.

AA senior Lily Peterson led all scorers with 16 points. Senior Erin Lockin pitched in with 13 points of her own as senior Mary Barnes hit four three pointers for 12 points.

The Panthers were led by senior Abby Jones’ eight points and five rebounds. Junior Lizzie Lenhart had seven points and four rebounds. Senior Olivia Schaller added two and senior Kallie Goettsch had one. Goettsch also had five rebounds.

Alta-Aurelia improves to 2-2 on the year. They will host 1-4 Sioux Central on Tuesday night. St. Mary’s falls to 0-2 and will entertain 3-1 Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Aryshire on Tuesday in the Panther Pit.
