Third-grade teacher Michelle (Allan) Helt SL’02 was selected as Nebraska’s Teacher of the Year for 2018 by a panel of Nebraska educators.

Helt is in her 16th year of teaching at Cardinal Elementary School in the South Sioux City Community Schools.

The Teacher of the Year program recognizes the contributions of classroom teachers who are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled, and who have the ability to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.

She will go on to participate in the National Teacher of the Year competition in April.

“My commitment to the profession of teaching has never wavered. I have always known teaching to be my calling and passion in life,” Helt wrote.

“I feel my greatest accomplishment in education is consistently creating a positive, encouraging learning environment that allows all students to be successful and active participants in their education” Helt said.

Two important factors in helping students reach their potential is helping students understand the ‘why’ behind every standard and student involvement.”

Helt graduated summa cum laude from BVU with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
