Mae Elizabeth Van Buskirk was born to Jesse and Helen (Logan) Van Buskirk in Allendorf, on May 9, 1920. Mae was baptized into the Christian faith at home in Allendorf. She attended grade school in Allendorf and later moved to Ottosen, where she graduated from high school. After attending Iowa State Teachers College she taught at several country schools for four years. During World War II she was employed by the Army Signal Corps in Washington, D. C. and lived in Arlingon, Virginia with her sister Jessie.
After returning to Iowa, Mae was confirmed by Rev. Bleeke at St. Johnís Lutheran church in Storm Lake, Iowa. On February 23, 1947, she married Gerald (Chris) Iversen of Storm Lake and joined St. Johnís Lutheran church with her husband. On their first wedding anniversary their daughter, Kay was born. Like many people who grew up during the depression, Mae was a frugal person. During the early years of their marriage she grew a garden, canned the produce, and sewed clothing for herself and Kay. Even in later years she hated to pay full price for clothes and was a good bargain hunter.
As St. Johnís congregation out grew their facilities, Mae and Chris became charter members of Grace Lutheran church. Mae taught Sunday school, vacation Bible School, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was active in Ladies Aid. She was a faithful member of the church, helping when and where needed. Mae liked to take weekend drives with her husband to Sioux City or Omaha just to see new scenery or do a little shopping. In 1999 she started having some health problems which forced her to curtail some activities.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kay Iversen of Spencer. Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chris; and four sisters: Dorothy Holt; Jessie Kroeger; Vera Pressel; and twin, Fae Berninghaus.
