Ridge View runs roughshod over North Union
HOLSTEIN - The Raptor rushing attack was in full force on Friday night as they rolled to the tune of 390 yards on the ground against North Union, taking a 45-0 contest to begin district play.
North Union picked up a first down on their opening possession of the game, but were then forced to punt the ball away to the Raptors. Ridge View earned a first down and then had to punt the ball away. The Raptor special teams pinned NU down on their own 10 yard line. A few players later, NU had a bad snap to give Ridge View the ball on NU 17 yard line. Five plays later, Jake Tokheim dove in the end zone on a sneak.
A three and out followed for North Union as Ridge View went 74 yards in just three plays to score again. Senior Jaxon Franken had a 21 yard run on the drive and senior Jake Mitchell had a 45 yard scamper. Later in the first half, Ridge View appeared to have a 70 yard TD run, but a holding call dashed the idea, setting the Raptors back. Ridge View drove late in the opening half but an interception thrown by an under duress Tokheim stopped another promising Ridge View possession.
“We played well in the first half but struggled a little offensively on our last two or three possessions of the half,” Ridge View Coach Dale Tokheim said. “With input from the coaching staff and the offensive line, we decided on some adjustments and went over with with the boys.”
Ridge View came out with an 11 play drive that went 70 yards and ate seven minutes off of the clock, culminating in a score. The defense stepped up with another three and out, and the ensuing RV possession resulted in another score. Ridge View continued to shut down the North Union offense as they began to rotate younger players on the field.
The JV offense was getting prepped to get on the field when senior Jake Kliegl crashed through the line on an 81 yard scoring play.
“The best thing about the game was the fact that the boys went out there and executed what we talked about. I think we have a very smart group of kids and they are coachable,” Tokheim said.
Mitchell had 15 rushing attempts for 140 yards with two scores and Kliegl had 14 carries for 146 yards and the long run to lead the Ridge View offense. Jake Tokheim went 4-for-9 for 39 yards with an interception. Logan Cuthrell had two grabs for 27 yards. The Ridge View defense held North Union to 124 yards and just three first downs.
Ridge View sees their record go to 2-1, 1-0. Up next is a trip to Hartley to take on 2-1, 1-0 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. HMS bested South O’Brien, 27-14, to begin district play.
