On Friday, March 31st, 60 Storm Lake High School students traveled to Northwestern College in Orange City, to participate in the first annual Northwest Iowa Cultural GRIT Conference.

The Conference was sponsored by Northwestern College and the Iowa State Extension Office as a means to promote higher education and leadership skills for multicultural students. Students had the opportunity to break out into academic sessions with Northwestern College professors in order to gain an idea of what a college class might entail. Some of the academic sessions included dissecting rats, participating in an acting class, learning about healthy living choices, and learning how to interpret/translate written English into Spanish, and visa-versa.

“The students enjoyed the day immensely, and Storm Lake High School would like to thank Northwestern College and the Iowa State Extension Office for providing such a fantastic, optimistic opportunity for all of the students in attendance,” said Kevin Newton, Storm Lake ESL teacher.
