Freedom Quilts is hosting its annual Honoring Heroes event April 8. The following heroes and their families are being honored: Captain Robert Yllescas, Sgt Leevon Ritter, MSgt Jerrald Meek, SSgt Joseph Hamski, Police Officer Susan Farrell and Police Officer Carlos Morales. Officer Rodrigo Santizo will be speaking about the two police officers who were lost in the line of duty. Two of the military families loss their love ones due to post-traumatic stress disorder, others were killed while serving in the Middle East.

The event will be held at the Freedom Quilts Shop, 13637 550th Street, rural Fonda, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Organizer Betty Nielsen said they hope to hold a pinning ceremony for some Vietnam veterans to begin the event.

Freedom Quilts, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of comforting mourning families. Throughout its early years, efforts were dedicated to those families who lost a loved one in the 9/11 tragedy, and then expanded to the families of fallen soldiers. “Through the gift of a quilt, we strive to comfort these families and preserve the honor and memory of their loved ones,” Nielsen said.

Freedom Quilts volunteers create unique, personalized quilts for family members who have lost a loved one in the line of duty, as gifts of love and compassion.
