Police: man was ‘huffing’ before rollover crash

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Storm Lake police say that a local man was “huffing” inhalants shortly before crashing his car in a rollover accident Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in a power outage for the surrounding neighborhood.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., police were called to an area near the intersection of Expansion Blvd. and Richland Drive. A vehicle operated by Francisco Martinez-Neri, age 32, of Storm Lake was traveling west on Richland Drive, when it had crossed the center line, then went off the roadway.  The vehicle struck a utility pole guideline, and rolled over. Martinez-Neri was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center by ambulance with unspecified injuries.

Mid-American Energy crews restored power to the area.

Police located and seized multiple aerosol cans at the scene of the accident and in Martinez-Neri’s vehicle, and after an investigation allege that he was “huffing” just before the crash.

The SLPD charged Martinez-Neri with OWI 2nd Offense and Failure to Maintain Control while he was still at the medical center. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $5,500, with another $3,000 in damage to the utility pole.

The SLPD was assisted by Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa State Patrol, Buena Vista County Paramedics, Storm Lake Street Department and Mid-American Energy.
