Celebrating 25 years with Miracle on Lake Avenue
Storm Lake enjoyed the holiday merriment during the 2016 Miracle on Lake Avenue celebration held on Thursday December 8th. Once again, the community enjoyed the holiday parade led by Grand Marshal Scrooge winner, Missy McCormick and Hometown Heroes from the Storm Lake football team. The winners for this year’s parade entries were Dean Carrington at First Place, BV Community Theater at second place and Edwards Auto Group at Third Place. In addition to the parade, attendants enjoyed the annual tree lighting ceremony, lots of kids activities and snacks downtown with warming stations at local retailers, visits with Santa at Santa’s Castle and a live performance with Jeff Carver at Lake Avenue Lounge.
In honor of the 25th Anniversary, a few nostalgic activities from the past were reintroduced including the Scrooge contest and the Avenue of Trees. This year, the scrooge contest had four contestants including Dan Richardson from Citizens First National Bank, Missy McCormick from Pizza Ranch, Juan “JC” Calles from Storm Lake Radio, and Lisa Funk from Storm Lake Bakery. All four scrooge elects were revealed to the community in November and citizens were encouraged to vote by placing donations in coordinating containers around town. The donations were then tallied on Monday, December 5th, and Missy McCormick of Pizza Ranch was named the 2016 Scrooge winner and led the Miracle on Lake Avenue Parade as Grand Marshal. The donations from the contest will be given to Upper Des Moines Opportunity to help provide food to families this holiday season.
The event was even more merry and bright for 2016 with the Avenue of Trees! Local businesses sponsored trees that lit up Lake Avenue on Thursday night. Sponsoring businesses included Sugar Bowl Gift Shop, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Kristi’s Kandies and Heirlooms, Paxtons Jewelry, Better Day Café, The Uniform Shop, Rust’s Western Shed and Menswear, The Storm Lake Times, Hy-Vee, King’s Pointe Resort, Grand Central, Hawk-I Plumbing, Rasmussen Ford, and Hoffman’s Flower and Candle Shop. The avenue of Trees was made possible thanks to these businesses and with the help of Fareway and Hawk-I Electric.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us downtown for the 25th Annual Miracle on Lake Avenue celebration!
