School conference turnout a mixed bag

Monday, November 21, 2016

Attendance at student conferences is an indicator of parental involvement in their childrenís education. Storm Lake school leaders report high turnout at the lower grade levels, but lower rates at the high school.

The preschool programs recorded 98 percent participation of parents at the most recent conferences, the elementary had 97 percent, the middle school 95 percent. The high school rate is 78 percent. There are plans to do some research to see if the turnout relates to grades the students earn. Principal Beau Ruleaux notes that online programs allow parents to track their studentís grades 24/7, so they may not feel they need to attend conferences to get report cards. The school has tried sending letters and making calls to encourage parents to come, without much success. Efforts will continue.
