Storm Lake Public Library, in conjunction with Buena Vista Conservation is currently hosting Nature Tots. The program is held once a month at 10:30 on a Wednesday morning. Each meeting is a chance for preschool kids ages 2-4 to come learn about animals and participate in fun activities. The event includes a story-time, about the featured animal. October’s animal was a duck. Students from the East Preschool Class in Storm Lake attended the event, along with other kids in the community.

The program was taught by Naturalist Katie Struss, who works for the Buena Vista County Conservation. Strauss says this is a good opportunity for kids to get out and learn a little, before being in formal classroom settings. She hopes that the event acts as a fun early educational experience not only for the children but for the parents as well.

There is normally an activity of some variety at the presentations, the last one being a duck themed coloring sheet for the children. Struss also brought a few mounted ducks and feathers for the children to look at. Struss says that when it’s possible she does bring live animals to her classes. Presently the program is slated to run at the Library through August 2017. It win feature everything from worms to winter birds and raptors.

Kids gather around for snacks and coloring following a presentation on ducks by naturalist Katie Struss.
