Electrified waters, 20 foot drops, and fire challenges were just a few of the features of the extreme obstacle course at the center of this year’s middle school mock trial case for Storm Lake St. Mary’s Middle School team. The students competed at the regional competition in Rock Rapids October 29. The team prepared under the direction of attorney coach John Murray, teacher-coaches Laura Anderson and Angie Siefken. Mock Trial “alumni” Megan McDaniel and Aron Villegas assisted.

In the case, the Estate of Alejandro Desafios has brought a civil suit against the Storm Chase LLC. The plaintiff has asserted that the negligent actions of the obstacle course organizers caused the death of Alejandro Desafios. Meanwhile, while the defense offers condolences to the family they have insisted this death was a tragic accident. They argue that Mr. Desafios signed a wavier and clearly accepted the risks associated with extreme obstacle course participation.
