What's the matter with America?

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Prior to the American Revolution only the wealthy elites ruled nations. When our forefathers setup a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people", the idea that the common man could run a country was shocking and frightened the wealthy elites of the world. Ben Franklin and the other founding fathers were very concerned that the wealthy would soon corrupt the government for their own purposes and subvert the will of the people. Thomas Jefferson talked about the need for a revolution every generation to redirect the government back to serving the will of the people.

Over the generations the elites took more and more power away from the people. Some progressives such as Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt redirected power back to the common man but by 1929 the wealthy had already rigged the economy. Income equality had become as bad as it is now causing 25% unemployment and a great depression. A very progressive president Franklin Roosevelt heavily taxed corporations and the wealthy. Roosevelt set up social security, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and restored a government of, by, and for the people.

The result was a period of economic growth in America that the world had never seen before. It also led to the formation of the largest middle class ever seen in all of human history. Now in 2016 most people realize there is something wrong with our country but most don't know what it is. America is not working for the poor or middle class but it is working very well for the wealthy elites. They have rigged the economy. They have bought our politicians and the government works in their interests. History tells us things will only get worse unless we elect a progressive president who is not beholding to the big money interests. We need a president who will take power away from wealthy elites and transnational corporations and return the power back to the people.

Remember if you don't vote you don't count.
