Robert M. "Bob" Compton, 91, of Cherokee, formerly of Quimby, passed away Friday morning, November 6, in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 12th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Quimby United Methodist Church. Pastor Barb Dinelli will officiate. Burial will be in the Galva Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Visitation was on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Online condolences can be left at

Bob was born on October 9, 1924 in Silver Creek Township, Ida County, to Ross and Margaret (McGeachy) Compton. He graduated from Galva High School in 1942. He was married to Frances E. Clapsaddle on January 16, 1946 in Des Moines. He served in the occupation army in Korea. He had farmed for 41 years, retiring in 1987. He had served on the Township Committee, Sealed Rock and Pilot Township for several years and measured Government acres for several years. He also drove school bus for Quimby/Willow Community School for 16 years. Bob was a member of the Quimby United Methodist Church, had served on the church board and had been chairman of the trustees and chairman of the Finance Committee. Bob was a 50 year member and past master of Little Sioux Masonic Lodge #521, charter member Quimby Lions Club and has served as Scout Master for Explorers. He had been a longtime resident of the Quimby area until moving to Cherokee in 2007. He loved road farming, especially driving by his own farm. He enjoyed the restoration of tractors and cars, table games, playing cards and going out to eat.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances on September 17, 2001, a brother Bruce Compton and his wife Marjorie, and a sister Dawn Etler, a sister-in-law Jean Sears and her husband Howard.

He is survived by his three children: Jim (Pat) Compton of Aurelia; Alan (Merrikay) Compton of Garden Ridge, Texas; Tammy (Larry) Norton of Florence, Arizona; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: Tonya (Nate) Bauer of Moville and their children Tyler and Brooke; Jody (Matt) Radke of Sheldon and their children Mckensey, Payton, Brennan and Blake; Jamie (Stacy) Compton of Alconbury, England and their daughter Sophie; Aaron (Jessica) Compton of Plano, Texas and their children Emily and Allison; Melissa (Zach) Martinez of Seguin, Texas; Alex Compton of Garden Ridge, Texas; his special companion Barb Volkert of Cherokee; a brother-in-law Clarence Etler of Odebolt.
