The Mustangs justified their spot atop the polls Thursday night as they took down Class 2A's ninth-ranked Hinton in overtime, 73-71.
Hinton built a 10-point lead early on, but the Mustangs fought back to tie it at 16-apiece late in the first. Newell-Fonda would trail by five after one, but would remain in the thick of it the rest of the way, with neither team leading by more than six.
After a back and forth fourth quarter, Taiyler Schrank looked to have sealed it for the Mustangs as her three-pointer gave them a 64-61 lead with just 2.8 seconds left on the clock.
Hinton's half court heave found Sadie Shuck at midcourt, and she found Alex Yoerger, who banked in a three over Andrea Christensen to force overtime.
The Mustangs went down three early in the extra frame but knocked down back-to-back triples of their own to reclaim the lead for good.
"It was a tremendous effort by both teams," said Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers. "A tournament atmosphere game with a lot of different kids stepping up."
Renee Maneman led the Mustangs as she poured in 32 points on 13-of-23 shooting. She was 3-of-6 from three and 3-of-7 at the line. She added 10 points and seven assists. Claudia Larsen had 14 points and seven rebounds, Schrank had 12 points and three rebounds, Christensen had four points and four boards, and Brianna Wells four points and two steals.
Hinton suffered just their third loss with the setback. Lauren Hedlund led the way with 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Yoerger had 18 points and Schuck 16.
The win propels the Mustangs to 18-1 on the season. They wrap up regular season play Tuesday night at Sioux Central.
