NEWELL - The second-ranked Newell-Fonda girl's basketball team locked up yet another conference championship as they held of a fiesty South Central Calhoun squad at home Friday night in a 52-42 victory.
The Titans entered on a seven-game win streak and with a 15-2 record overall, and they would hold a 9-6 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs held slight control at half with a 20-18 lead, but a 14-8 run in the third quarter would provide them enough breathing room to lock up the win.
"This was a tournament atmosphere game," said Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers. "It was a rugged defensive battle. South Central Calhoun is a tremendous team that is very well coached. Fortunately, we made enough plays and hit our free throws to secure the game."
Renee Maneman poured in 28 points to lead Newell-Fonda (17-1) to the win. Claudia Larsen had 11, Andrea Christensen four, and Taiyler Schrank three.
Haley Birks led SCC with 22 points on the night.
The Mustangs are on the road Thursday night to take on Hinton. They're at home next Friday against Alta-Aurelia.
