No guns in school

Monday, January 21, 2013

In response to questions over teachers carrying firearms to school:

The Iowa State Education Association is deeply committed to the safety of every child in the classroom. We adamantly oppose the idea of education professionals bringing weapons into our schools in a so-called effort to "protect" students from harm. Ending violence at our schools will not happen if we answer the problem with more violence. It will only end by standing strong and demanding that our schools be sanctuaries free from violence.

We strongly support efforts to increase mental health awareness and resources, placing school safety at the top of our priority list, and helping to end school violence through ongoing and community-wide efforts.

Our hearts are broken from the tragedy in Newtown. Yet, we cannot let this horrible event become an impetus for bad policy
