The Alta Kiwanis met Tuesday, Jan.15 at Wel-Life.
This week's speaker was Joe Napierala - senior at Ata-Aurelia High School. Last March, Joe along with 49 other students from high schools across U.S. took part in NASA-sponsored Space Settlement Design Competition in Houston, Texas. Each of the 50 students was assigned to a different engineering task. Joe was a member of operations engineers. This group had to come up with a plan to develop a settlement on Mercury.
Next Joe was chosen as one of 12 international students to return to Houston this past summer. This time the group worked on plans to establish a floating settlement on Venus. After successful completion of this project, Joe was one of 10 chosen to attend a competition in New Delhi, India from Feb.17-26. This is the first time Americans have been asked to attend. the trip will cost around $2,000. The Kiwanis group voted to give $400 toward expenses. Good luck and best wishes to Joe.
Other business: Next pop can collection set for Feb. 15. The date for serving pancakes at A-A High School has been changed to Feb. 21.
The Kiwanis pancake fundraiser is set for Sunday, March 10. Valentine's day supper for Kiwanis members and spouses willbe Feb. 14 at Hoodlebug in Alta.
There is an invitation from the Aurelia Kiwanis to the Alta Kiwanis to attend a dinner meeting Jan. 31 at 11:30 a.m.
A motion was made and seconded to buy rolls for the up coming Ag-Partners meeting. A thank you was received from Sue Geyer, coordinator Lord's Cupboard, for the $100 donation from the Alta club.
Also from last week, Kiwanis received a $5,000 from B.V. Foundation to be given to A-A school music department. The Alta Kiwanis also gave $1,000 to the music group.
